Noel, there have always been some Israelis who believe that they could somehow outsmart Arafat to the point that they could box him in somewhow & make him keep some basic points of an agreement despite the fact that Arafat is committed to the 'armed struggle' forever (ie destroying Israel) and his word is utterly worthless.

Most Israelis have decided long ago that those who believe this are delusional. So they worked on boxing him in literally, and squeezing diplomatically, financially and with tanks. They've had it with the mistake of treating him as a statesman. They've seen what he does with such an opportunity.

The article just showcases Malko as one of these Israelis with delusions of outsmarting Arafat. There is no new point to discuss, everything has been hashed to death already. There are dozens of FA articles on the subject. The plain fact is, that if a leader's word is totally worthless, and he cannot be leveraged by concern for his own people, since he has none, and his basic goal in life is to kill you no matter the cost, then it is delusional at best and suicidal at worst to try to cut deals with him. He will only take what you give and use it against you.
