Yes I recall that article. News out of China seems to be intentionally inconsistent.

I am fairly sure that these are high-end handsets so you cant really compare the prices to the average GSM handset....however, until a $100 GSM 1x handset appears, it is hard to see this having much of an effect on Unicom's handset sales.

Message 20120191

The company had earlier ordered 500,000 dual-mode mobile service handsets, which allow its customers to switch between its upgraded CDMA and global system for mobile communications, or GSM, networks.

The cheapest of these handsets will cost about CNY4,000 each and be ready for sale in July, Lo added.

On GSM1X prices, it was my understanding that Dr J had a commitment NOT to place a premium price on these ASICS. He would have to be insane to do so as QCOM's China strategy (as well as poential invasion strategies elsewhere) involve converting GSM operators with legasy GSM equipment AND doing so in a way that does not impose an economic hardship on those GSM operators.

This $500 phone's high price is likely not due to QCOM.
