while you point out an interest semantic nuance... i don't think it addresses my point.

it is widely understood that an atheist does not accept the existence of God(s), which is precisely the same as saying that one does not believe in God(s).

from websters:

atheist

\A"the*ist\, n. [Gr. ? without god; 'a priv. + ? god: cf. F. ath['e]iste.] 1. One who disbelieves or denies the existence of a God, or supreme intelligent Being.

"A" is a negatory prefix- "a" theist means "not god" or "without God"- the atheist does not believe in God. "A" gnostic means not knowing- ergo the agnostic does not know whether there is a God or Gods, or not.( a-, meaning “without, not,” )

I am an agnostic, but get called an atheist quite frequently- I wish people more clearly understood the terms.
