Here is a disgusting example of the cherished and protected values you speak of.

"conservatives often tend to view themselves as the "heart" of america, therefore it follows that any ire directed at them is typically labeled anti-american"

Not a bad observation. They do think hard work and personal responsibity are what made America, and do resent attacks on those values. But the out of hand lying by the left about their opponents is anti-American imo, and should offend demos too. We are a country where you are guilty until proven innocent. And even though politics is not a court of law, the principal should be reasonably adgered too imo.

"it sounds to me like what you mean is that you love some idealized version of this place, where your beliefs form the core of our society."

I do love the idealized version. The one that is spelled out clearly in the constitution. The far left thinks the pledge having the words under God is equivelent to Congress passing a law to establish religion. They think we have no right to protect ourselves via the 2nd Amendment. Abd they think that victimizing groups and taking from others for these "victims" is better than encouraging the groups that need help. In the current case of the war on terror, they think we need the permission of countries that do not want us to prosper before we act. Tbe list goes on and on. I think our constitution is an ideal document that ideally represents an ideal America. So in that sense, I do love the idealized version.

"i think there are very few americans who hate america"

I think percentage wise, you are probably correct. But when you see me say someone hates it, I at least put up what makes it look like it to me. Dishonestly trashing our President during a time of war qualifies. Honest criticism (particularely when solutions are offered) is fine. Unfortunately I don't see too much of that.

Thanks for your thoughts though. You are laying out what you think instead of whining and casting blame.
