lbs, Excellent comments. Of course, everyone in the service, not just yellow bars, knew that you could not win a war you were fighting for a tie. You must have been a good Looey as you didn't get fragged.

Well said lbs. I got a book in the US from my ex-brother-in-law. Called "Marine Sniper" about a Gunny Sgt. Carlos Hathcock. Interesting book, true story, excellent Marine.

Please don't tell me we couldn't beat 17 million North Vietnamese with no navy or air force in less time.

Unless we were willing to make South Vietnam an Island, then yes, I am going to tell you flat out that war was not winable.

WTF were we there in the first place for?
Start there.
There was no reason to be there and it was not our war.
Johnson dragged us into it big time on a lie.
As for China, how do you know what they would or would not have done? Finally, fighting in the jungles of Vietnam is not exactly like fighting an air war or naval war with Japan.

Could we have won. Yes, if we were willing to flatten Hanoi, Nuke the north, and make South Vietnam an Island. Even then what would China's response have been? Russia's response.

Frome where we are today, tell me exactly what we would have accomplished besides NOTHING (unless you count wasting a lot of money and lives for no reason).

Vietnam was about as stupid as stupid goes, but to to it off we are doing it again (repeating the same mistakes in Iraq).

We couldn't even conquer South Vietnam. What makes you think we could conquer North Vietnam?

All we ever accomplished in Vietnam was killing a lot of people. We never made any political progress.
