By the way, were you there? I was fine tuning the training I had; trying not to get any of my 51 Marines killed in the process, winning the hearts and minds of the man in the rice paddie who was more interested in his village than in nation building. I do not believe we should have been there unless Congress declared war on North Vietnam. I don't believe we should have been in Korea or Iraq without following the Constitutional process to put us there with the backing of a majority of the American people. China wanted a buffer between themselves and any US puppets. Korea was the model the State Department and Defense Department worked from. We know the Chinese and the Russians were spending a lot of money to support the NVA. We also know that Uncle Ho was a nationalist who asked the USA at the end of WWII to keep the French out. We turned a deaf ear to his request. The war with Japan was ultimately won on the ground as all wars through out history have been won.I am sure you have heard of Iwo Jima, Guadalcanal, Okinawa, Guam, Tinian,Eni Wetok, etc. Jungle fighting was a factor in most of the island hopping for both the Marines and Army. I do not think we would have needed to nuke the North, but we will never know. I am offering my insights as someone who was there , participated in the fighting and against the Civil Disturbances held in Washington D.C. What did we accomplish? There are those who would argue that the Russians were more stressed economically than the USA was in their support of the North. This was a factor in the collapse and bankruptcy of the old Soviet Union. I am originally an Ohio boy. I support the Monroe Doctrine and am not in favor of sticking our noes in Europe's wars or anybody else's. My son is 19 now and I would prefer he not get the same kind of invitation I received in 1968. I do not support the doctrine of "My Country right or wrong". Thank you for your comments. Best Regards,
