agricultural subsidies

And what results have those agricultural subsidies achieved? Despite recent higher prices for corn and soybeans, it's still almost impossible to make a living as an individual farmer in the US. Most of the people I know who still farm are planting for the tax loss writeoff only. Maybe if you have livestock to feed and you happen to already own the machinery, it is marginally worthwhile. Otherwise, unless you have a couple of thousand acres and a million dollars worth of equipment, farming in the US is not even worth your time.

It's a sad situation, and further evidence that the problem of world hunger lies in food distribution, not production.

With all of the military flights to the middle east, maybe they could swing southward a little on the way and bomb Africa with some corn and wheat?
