The US troops could come out tomorrow and the death and destruction would escalate. We have a multitude of factions all with their eyes on power and oil in that country. The Iranians, Syrians, Shiite factions, Sunni factions, Kurd factions are all vying for control. Thats what is really going on. The violence is directed at mostly Iraqis these days and not US troops. The reason why the US troops were and still are targets to a lesser degree to these extraneous factions is that the US troops are the main impediment to their own power and money grab in the post Saddam power vacuum. The Iraqi also increasingly view Arab foreign fighters to be just as foreign as US soldiers and are increasinly disliked by Iraquis. Did you see the Iraqi group threatening to track down and kill foreign fighter Zhaquawi?

As Wayne just tried to tell you, resistance in Iraq would certainly continue if we were to leave, and not end until either becoming thoroughly defeated or thoroughly successful.
