In discussing whether or not to go to war, lives were on the line either way. Our situation is much more that of a policeman who sees a suspect pull something out of his jacket that might be a gun, and has to decide whether or not to fire. One is under pressure to make a decision in a timely manner. When it is question of someone's reputation, one is generally in a better position to take one's time, precisely because it is not life or death to make a decision quickly.
