this has been going on for a long time actually ... and it isn't just the old "protectionism" either -- some are starting to question the results -- some engineering can be outsourced profitably -- some can't -- gotta know the difference

I'm an engineer, and I've talked to my 16 1/2 year old a couple times in the past year about the prospects for engineering grads in the coming years -- very bleak -- and so work to steer him away. Don't think it's his bag anyway, but I think things will get far worse before they get better.

Outsourcing engineering --

I think this is one area that is slightly different that other outsourcing areas.

The big problem with engineering in the USA is that its a very difficult 4-year degree and it doesn't position you for the stratospheric pay like Law and MBAs do.

So most American kids aren't interested in engineering cuz it doesn't lead to a job where you can BS and shmooze your way up the pay scale. Why become an engineer when you can make 6 figures as a home refinancing loan officer ?

So where are companies to go to find good engineering talent ? Offshore.

Although I'm sure engineers in India are cheaper than US engineers, its not to the same degree as factory workers in India/China compared to factory workers here.
