See the distinction?

I do see your distinction.

because accusing any US official of putting Israel's interests first

But can we back up a step? I'm not getting a couple of your premises. First is all this talk of putting Israel's interests first. Where in "Likudnik" do you get that. I spoke to this the other day. Why an I not a Likudnik given that I approve of the tack Israel is now taking? Or, if you don't buy that usage, why is it not an Amererican Jew with special interest in Israel much as I have a special interest in Slovakia, an utterly harmless interest evidenced in most fairly recent immigrant families? I haven't seen anyone serious say directly that any American, neocon or otherwise, is putting Israel's interest's first, I don't think. The worst I've seen is that the judgment of people with special interest in Israel may be compromised by the attachment. There's a difference between "putting Israel's interests first" and "dual loyalty" and having a special interest, on a sliding scale. The first is obviously problematic across the board. I don't see a problem with the other two. You think that Guatamalans who have settled here but send money to their families back home don't have a dual loyalty?

then the old anti-Semitic tropes of judging the Jews by different, special standards and accusing the Jews of dual loyalty raise their heads.

If we can say that Guatamalans have a dual loyalty, are we really using special standards for Jews, tropes notwithstanding?
