They have used hysterics, lies, blatant distortions & intentional deceit in an attempt to scare folks into opposing the Act.

When I applied for a re-fi on my mortgage last week, I had to fill out and sign a Patriot Act form. Just what the hell my mortgage has to do with terrorism is something I'd really like to know. Just because some nutball raghead terrorists are bent on attacking the West is no reason for us to willy-nilly throw our cherished civil liberties out the window. The latter has much more potential to cause damage to this country than the former, IMO...

Well, it seems the liberal left is among the most vocal in
opposition of the entire Act. They have used hysterics,
lies, blatant distortions & intentional deceit in an
attempt to scare folks into opposing the Act.

That may be. That does not mean your and my civil liberties should be flushed down the toilet. As many democracies (maybe more) have fallen to the power lust of their governors as have fallen to foreign invaders.

That said, a temporary reduction of civil liberties is justifiable and may be necessary in wartime. THe best way to accomplish that is by a sunset provision in the original legislation. OTOH, there is that saying that there is nothing more permanent than a "temporary" emergency.

The first secret tribunals were authorized by FDR to try captured German saboteurs and spies. Lincoln basically trashed the Bill of Rights during the Civil War. The Republic and its Constitution survived.
