There's far more oil in the Middle East!
It's practical and politically expedient to use other people's oil first before having to draw on supplies in one's backyard.

Right now, the US is concerned that the present ongoing wave of immigration of Mexicanos might eventually turn present residents into strangers in their own country. Don't forget that large chucks of the US were formerly Mexico!!!!

IMHO, This will no doubt be accelerated if the US were to exploit Mexican oil. But for now, it can't because it will lose its credibility on many fronts.
