China backs democracy

Press Trust of India
BEIJING, July 13. — In a significant move, China today said it supports a “gradual” process of democratisation in neighbouring Myanmar but urged the international community to respect Yangon’s sovereignty and refrain from interfering in its internal affairs.
“We believe that the process of democratisation in Myanmar should be a gradual and step-by-step one,” Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Ms Zhang Qiyue told reporters in response to a question on China’s stance on the political situation in Myanmar. “We should respect the sovereignty of Myanmar and refrain from interfering with its internal affairs. We should create sound internal and external environment for the process of democratisation in Myanmar,” she said.
“As a close and friendly neighbour, we hope Myanmar maintains political stability and achieves economic development,” she said.
