Wayne, It sounds more to me like the author was a bit hysterical. Obviously, the guys didn't carry anything on board that hadn't been x-rayed. My guess is a bomb or bomb-making equipment would have been noticed. If they are a travelling band, and that's the part of the story nobody seems to have followed up on to completion, IMHO, they're going to carry their axes. To check them in means putting your means of making a living in the hands of baggage guys. The author said they'd been hired by some resort in the desert, but did the FBI attend a show? We don't know.

Looking at it from the other way around, can you imagine being one of 12 "furriners" on board a flying cigar container with a bunch of loony whites who see a terrorist under every bed? Pretty scary. The thought of getting lynched might force me to make a couple of trips to the john, too.

We've got x-ray machines for luggage and a metal detector for people. They make mistakes. We've got air marshalls and snitches to cover some of those mistakes. Some of the band should have been "randomly selected" for a closer search. The last time I flew, approximately every 5th person got searched. That should have nabbed 2-3 of the ME folks.

There were no arrests and their passports and luggage must have been in order. This might shock the author, but perhaps the nice guy with the goatee was just a nice guy with a goatee.

Isn't it possible that this reporter was simply 'played' by the FBI/Home Security folks....afterall, terror must remain front and center, right? Who better to trumpet the ever present risk than an "unbiased" self-important member of the press who is, of course, fed a seven course meal of privileged information. Manipulation/spin, whatever, her story reeks. She got NOVAK'D!!!!!!!
