KT,

I'm going to have to disagree with you one this one. I consider myself a libertarian. So I rarely think it's a good idea to play with civil liberties or expand the role of government.

However, I think "political correctness" has been a major factor in deciding whether we will use use profiling as part of the fight against terrorism. If we approve of it here, there would another debate about whether we can use it other areas of law enforcement. That's a 3rd rail.

Personally, if I were an Arab American I would have no problem with security being heightened for people that look just like me (including me). I would actually encourage it. I wouldn't consider a violation of any type. I would consider it a common sense security and law enforcement measure that I would be willing to cope with because it would increase my own safety.

I would have a major problem with getting beat up, getting arrested or detained for a long period for no reason etc....

It would be up to thoughtful people, the press, etc.. to ensure that common sense efforts that inconvenience a few but that potentially save many lives don't expand into something scary.
