"...why did they hate us?" Still an appropriate question.

"I find it quite odd that the whole of the Left is saying this now, when at the time they widely opposed the invasion of Afghanistan. "

Nonsense. The whole of the left never said that.
1) There is no spokesperson for the whole of the left.
2) There was wide spread support for the Afganistan invasion as reflected in the number of states that participate in that war.

I did find this in a google search(opposition to the 2001 Afganistan invasion):
satp.org

The Bush II regime squandered the sympathy that arose from 9/11.

The Sept. 14 joint resolution of Congress, which
authorized the president to "use all necessary and appropriate force
against those nations, organizations, or persons he determines planned,
authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks on September 11,
2001", which authorized the Afghanistan invasion, was voted for by every single member of Congress, but one (a California kook). There's always a fringe, but "the whole of the Left... opposed the invasion of Afghanistan"? I don't think so. The country was unified behind this, from Teddy Kennedy to Rush Limbaugh.
