Duke, re "But lurking in the background is the Accumulated earnings tax which is, IIRC, 50 to 70%!!! MS has already had discourse with the IRS about this over the years. This is the key: A company is allowed to accumulate but not distribute earnings IF there is a need for the money, without tax consequences."

Then how do you explain this definition?

"accumulated earnings tax -- An additional tax on earnings that a business retains in an attempt to avoid the higher income taxes the owners would be subject to if the earnings were paid out to them as dividends."
investorwords.com

Perhaps you meant to say a company is allowed to distribute but not accumulate earnings UNLESS there is a need for the money, without tax consequences.

Duke, RE: "Now that the big Antitrust case has been settled THIS MONTH for the first time, MS must do something."

I have been assuming the payout/buyback was purely a bullish indicator, without any other potential agenda. Probably will still increase some Intc leaps.

What is up with this market? Tech got slammed today. Geez.

I think large companies should create a new type of dividend - a stock option - for the long-term holders. Some of the WS crowd deserves none of those due to their short-term momo nature - I think short-term investors and long-term investors could use more of a distinction - why not use options as a way to do so. A little bit more interesting than a cash or share dividend.
