The answer is pride and failure to recognize that they do not possess the skills they THINK they have.

You have hit the nail right on the head!

They are not willing to take the jobs that immigrants (legal and illegal) are willing to take because they think it is too demeaning and too much of a come-down for them to take those jobs. They hate to appear to be "grovelling" for jobs that pay only a pittance. Also, they resent to be seen as living at the same economic level as the immigrants.

To worsen matters for themselves, they refuse to recognize their lack of skills. Things can get worse and ugly, however, when these deluded folks blame the immigrants for "stealing" their jobs.

I have heard the refrain about jobs being stolen by immigrants to the detriment of "whities" in Canada over the years. (I presume the same refrain is heard in the US too.) Little do those folks realize that, but for the immigrants willing to do the "demeaning" jobs and services(for example, emptying chamber pots and washing toilets & etc), the economy of the country is somehow held up for the benefit of all.
