On July 7th I wrote in the Business Communications Review Online Forum in a thread I titled "Those Enigmatic FTTP Solutions":makeashorterlink.com "After the recent spate of RBOC announcements that claim that they will be passing so many millions of homes with fiber before the end of this year under their FTTP initiatives, while targeting much larger numbers for the out years, today I came across a homeowner in Tampa who claims that fiber is indeed being readied for his residence. This represents the first time -- that I have been made aware of, at least -- where a VDSL solution is not the intended method of deploying what the carriers have dubbed FTTP. Which then only servers to beg the question: Why isn't this called fiber to the home, or FTTH?" I thought that I had posted that message here, too, but it's apparent that I did not. I suspect that the native fiber variety such as the one I cited will be very few and far between in comparison to the VDSL type, for obvious reasons. The ILECs will undoubtedly leverage the right circumstances and opportunities, such as new subdivisions and affluent neighborhoods who've been hungering for first-time telco-brand broadband (who've already been exposed to Cable Modem), to deploy native fiber builds like this one. When I first came across the "Fios" acronym in the Verizon releases I wasted an inordinate amount of time attempting to find out what it meant. Do you or anyone else here know, without my once again wasting a Saturday morning searching ;)? Here's another release by Verizon from July 19th that lays out their plans in FL, TX and CA locales, with regard to pricing, which I also found interesting: extremetech.com FAC frank@fttx.org
