Starr did not quiz Clinton about his sex life. That was done by the lawyers in the case of Jones vs. Clinton. His lawyers objected, but the trial judge overruled the objection, and ordered him to answer the questions, on the basis that it could lead to evidence which could be used at trial. So then Clinton perjured himself. Starr was ordered to investigate perjury in the Jones case. Monica committed perjury but got away with it. Clinton eventually admitted that he committed perjury, and was eventually disbarred.

The reason Clinton's sexual peccadillos were relevant in the Jones case is that in order to recover damages, you must prove various things, including that the employer knew, or should have known, that sexual harassment was taking place. Which, by the way, is not an easy thing to prove, unless you can get people to admit it, and that means finding people who may not want to talk unless under subpoena.

My point to CB and thread was that the star/paula jones/lewinsky stuff may have prevented from clinton from doing the right thing re: terror because of fear of being accused the wag the dog scenario. If so and i think i saw sandy berger once allude to it when he was carrying some documents(g), the anti clinton hysteria may have helped cause 911. Of course its clintons fault ultimately for being so damn reckless. Now fast forward to post 9/11 bush. The extreme nature of the anti bush movement may have prevented this pres from doing some good things re fp. ??? mike@tiredofspin.com
