Yes, it is strange that your primary understanding of mankind's nature seems to be that human beings are brutes. Liberalism, true old-fashioned liberalism, was founded on a belief in natural law, on the belief that all mankind is endowed with certain admirable abilities such as the ability to reason, and the ability to discern right from wrong, and that all mankind is drawn to ideals like truth, justice, fairness, civility, protection of the weak. Men are not angels, as Madison put it, but are not devils, either.
