You're giving the American people a little too much credit. Sure, people who frequent SI wouldn't be surprised, after all we've been talking about an Osama Bin Laden October Surprise for months now. But, the average American hasn't considered this possibility, and we all know the American people are an emotial bunch. If Osama is captured days before the election and paraded all over the media, the American people will react with approval. Some of those fence sitters and people who were disillusion with President Bush will be all riled up to vote for Bush. It could be enough of a surge to put Bush over the top. I read that the Bush Admin is putting pressure on Pakistan to deliver Bin Laden before November. They know the implications of finding him before the election.

I agree that this sort of thing will be instantly suspect, but so what? Suspect by who? The 1% or 2% of intellectuals in this country who aren't rightwingers? It's not going to matter. It will have it's intended effect, even if it's discovered to be ruse later. Sound familiar, like WMDs and Iraq.

Considering the Bushes and Bin Laudens are friends, why wouldn't Bushies have Osama locked up somewhere waiting for October to suddenly be "caught"? On the other hand, Bush hasn't mentioned Osama in 2 years so maybe he's forgotten about him. Meanwhile, a whole new crew of Al Qaida leaders have emerged, energized by Bush's arrogance and lies surrounding Iraq. Kerry can put a stop to this nonsense.
