No... one of these days, we have to let go of the black-and-white belief that our economy needs to be "capitalist" or "socialist."

Our economy should be capitalist AND socialist. A "socialist" component can take care of what the people of this country need, and a "capitalist" component can take care of what they want. I've said it before.

EDIT: On the other hand, it can't be blindly either way... we can't just institute something like socialized medicine; we have to plan it out and consider the consequences and plan for them as well. Like a well-run business.

Of course, you probably think the Gates family is a model for the way rich people ought to spend their money, and there is no other way to get other rich people to follow that model without involving government. Maybe one of these days, we're going to let go of the myth that communism, and it's lesser cousin socialism, is a good idea and just needs another chance.

And we also may realize that too much of capitalism is not such a good thing for ALL Americans.

Disliking socialism because it may mean more of your taxes will go to help less fortunate Americans is absolutely the worst reason to be opposed.

Tenchusatsu, so what about Ellison?

On another note, even for well-intentioned families, what if their focus doesn't match what our American society needs?

The immune disorders (Lupus, polymetriosis, etc.) which are are majority inflicted on women (something like 80% patients are women), don't get the fair treatment for funding, according to a report from the midwest analyzing funding on illnesses. Maybe society should have a say in funding allocations for such illnesses, in the face of this discrepancy.

It wasn't until THIS year, that the medical association released heart attack guidelines for women - never mind the fact that this is the # 1 killer for women and their symptoms are different than men. The Association was telling doctors to basically ignore the major warning signs that women have - to tell them it's in their head.

Talk about blatant discrimination, albeit unintentional

If women controlled 50% of the world's capital (rather than only 2%), we'd see a very, very different world.

This is where the opportunity is.
