Big Govt, More Govt, Scary Govt
Bush Calls for New Intelligence Director

"I don't think the person should be a member of my Cabinet," Bush said. "I will hire the person and I can fire the person. ... I don't think that the office should be in the White House, however, I think it should be a stand-alone group to better coordinate."

apnews.excite.com

Bush wants total authority over who occupies the office. What's the difference between being a cabinet level post or not? Cabinet members must be approved by the Senate. Non cabinet positions have no congressional oversight.

Now what do we need this office for?
We added a dept of homeland security did we not.
Are they not doing their job?
Do we have a CIA?
Do we need another group that does not talk to the CIA, the FBI, and the Dept of Homeland Security?

This goes beyond annoying to downright scary.
A no congressional oversight intelligence function.
Our bill of rights gets weaker by the minute wuth this idiot in the whitehouse.

Mish

Bush seeks to reform U.S. intelligence structure

WASHINGTON (AFX) -- President Bush said Monday he wants to overhaul the structure of the U.S. intelligence community by creating a position for a single individual to oversee a host of disparate spy shops

The move is a shift for the administration, which was skeptical of the idea when the Sept. 11 commission recommended the overhaul in its 567-page report last month

Asked why he embraced the idea over the objections of some of his advisors, Bush told reporters during an impromptu press conference in the White House Rose Garden he "thought it was the right thing to do." Democratic nominee for president John Kerry has called for the creation of a single national director of intelligence since the report was issued

In addition to the single overseer of intelligence, Bush wants to create a center that will coordinate counterterrorism operations so that "efforts are unified in priority and purpose."
[Yet another link in the chain. Why dont we start combining some links instead of adding more? How big is govt going to get under this turkey? mish]

Bush said Congress could study the matter during its August recess and begin formal deliberations on the massive restructuring when lawmakers return to Washington in September

The announcement comes one day after Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge raised the terrorism threat level in northern New Jersey and Washington to join New York at the orange, or high, alert level. In making the change, Ridge cited "unusually specific" evidence of possible al-Qaida attacks against key financial sector buildings, including the International Monetary Fund and the New York Stock Exchange

"What we're talking about here is a very serious matter based upon sound intelligence," Bush said
[Now, is this "sounder" than all of the other BullShit thsese idiots have believed?]

Asked about the intelligence failures leading up to the war in Iraq, Bush defended his decision to oust former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein

"Knowing what I know today, we still would have gone into Iraq," Bush said
