Bush is digging a deeper hole for himself. The scare talk about terrorist threats spooks the oil futures market and keeps the price of gasoline high. The economic issues are the ones which will finally doom the Bush Administration.

It looks to me that Bush wants to make sure his convention is a safe one. How better to insure that than raising the alerts in NYC?

...by now you would have thought that the Bush Administration would have learnt about hoax threats from their captures of major Al Qaeda figures. I wonder that if the Bush Administration was serious about busting the sleeper cells here, would they not want to just keep quiet and at the same time increase the level of surveillance so as to catch those folks in the act.

Several thoughts here. One, I suspect that the initial leak came from Pakastani sources. Two, there appears to have been some documentary evidence, probably taken off of hard drives, supporting the threats. Three, it would be difficult, if not impossible, to increase the security around specific potential targets without drawing media attention. Fourth, the publicity surrounding the threats will probably work to dissuade the terrorists from attacking those specific targets. That is not to say that they will not target other facilities, but they may have to go back into a planning mode. I am sure that el Qaeda was already aware that their operative had been taken out. It is highly likely that any operations that this particular operative had information on may have already been shut down.

The administration is between a rock and a hard place when it comes to the issue of terror warnings. For the foreseeable future, every administration is going to error on the side of caution when it comes to the dissemination of news. The information on this particular threat was very specific and the response seems both specific and appropriate.

BTW, in an earlier post you were wondering why Ridge was possibly thinking about stepping down after the election. The reason cited in the rumor that is circulating is fatigue. He has a burn out position.
