I always had the feeling (which Nancy Reagan validated in her autobiography) that Ronald and Nancy Reagan were so wrapped up in each other that the kids were peripheral to their relationship. They simply didn't matter as much, though I'm sure their parents loved them. Naturally the kids knew this and resented it. But both Ron and Patti Reagan seem to be such lightweights that they never got beyond it.

Actually, I don't remember that. I'll take your word for it. The criticism of him that I remember was that he was dotty and unindustrious and quite possibly out of the loop.
