AMAT Applied Materials upped to Buy from Hold at Smith Barney; TER upped to Hold from Sell (16.45 )

Smith Barney says that Semi Equipment stocks are losing some volatility relative to the mkt and other names in technology -- essentially converging over time to "fair value". While the firm is more negative on the CY2005 capex, they believe the the downturn will be much shallower and generally shorter than prior cycles. While it could be too early, they suggest buying on bad news as 2005 expectations come down over the coming months. Within the sector the firm upgrades AMAT to Buy from Hold and TER to Hold from Sell, given the relatively short and shallow downturn

Not quite sure how a move to 300mm will affect AMAT negatively, as AMAT has the broadest product line for 300mm by far....
