Remember when Al Greenspan was talking about his concern about America's surplus. Go figure. I always felt they should have been paying down more of the debt. Now we've got an even bigger hole. I don't have confidence in any party reducing the deficit. Both like to spend and tax. Frugality and a better system, for some reason never gets attention. Kerry's idea about using volunteers is the closest thing to a new idea, which I feel is the right approach. Here's my thoughts: - if people want health care, then they get it only if they sign a document saying they will exercise one hour a day (if they are handicapped, then a modified agreement), and if they maintain the weight range appropriate for their height. - if people want soc sec, then they need to sign up for a govt forced retirement plan (not to be confused with fica) that's 10% of their income, where it's stored in a brokerage account just like an IRA they can't touch. - if people want medicare/medicaid when they get old, then they need to earn their credits by volunteering x hours of their time assisting people in nursing homes or adult-day care centers. - there needs to be a huge change in the system where volunteers are used in order to reduce the deficit. Our system is currently too top-down, which is an expensive way to operate. - the govt needs to have the guts to make the changes now, rather than making dishonest promises they won't be able to deliver unless they fix the system now. Our govt laws need to be updated to encourage independence and good health. Regards, Amy J
