They have not wanted to rehash it in a left tilted media. False stories from reporters like CNN and Time Magazine's darling, Peter Arnett, left a bitter taste for the media. Dan Rather did not help with his junk stories from Nam. Who can blame the Vets for not wanting to wade through all that garbage again? I believe several things have brought the Nam Vets to life. The combination of the on-going current war, the refusal by some politicians (including Kerry) to support the troops 100%, and Kerry's decision to run for president coupled with his insistence on making his abbreviated combat tour the centerpiece of his campaign, and of course Kerry's false accusations portraying all Nam Vets as baby killers. The feeling I get around the Vet circles is if Kerry wants to demand hero status for a cameo performance so be it. Let him demand it. But he will also have to own his actions and words that debilitated the war effort and hurt troop morale. And he will have to own his own voting and speaking record that prove he is attempting, once again, to use a current war for his own personal gain at the expense of our current servicemen. Most Nam Vets care deeply about supporting our troops actively engaged in combat. Nam Vets are patriotic. They vote. They are participants in their communities and churches but most have shunned open politics in the past. Kerry changed that. He woke them up and they realize how important it is to get involved. The internet has provided an easy communications system for Vets to relocate each other and to organize. There has been a deliberateness about the effort to defeat Kerry that is just amazing. A major concern for all has been to avoid the pitfalls that sunk Peter Arnett. Maintaining the highest standards of integrity and honesty are key to this. Every Nam Vet has a story. If we choose to tell ours, we are expected to be painfully honest. I expect Kerry and the press to try to minimize damage by attacking the messengers. I also believe they will have a very difficult time dismissing the message. "Truth is enduring" and "Truth prevails" are two simple lessons that John Kerry is about to learn from the Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Coasties and Airmen he has continually abused for 33 years. If you want to get an idea of how many Vietnam Vets are for Kerry, google, "Vietnam Veterans for Kerry" and click through a few pages. If the difference between Jane Fonda and Bill Clinton was Jane Fonda went to Vietnam. The difference between John Kerry and GWB is GWB went to Iraq. I believe patriotism is back in style. There are 5 flags flying in front of homes in my nearby neighborhood today. A Nam Vet lives in each of those homes. Unlike Kerry, they are not asking for hero status. They are, however, asking, for the first time, to be heard. Their message is a simple one, "Once again, John Kerry has turned his back on those who serve in our Armed Forces." unclewest
