I think there are several factors hurting Bush in the last couple of weeks:

1) The continued turmoil in Iraq (August has been terrible).

2) The DNC and Kerry's great speech.

3) A backlash against all the negativity of the Bush campaign.

There is probably more (the largest deficit ever, appearance of politically motivated terror alerts, etc.).
