So what? There were thousands of atrocities in Nam and the US government in 1971 was definitely covering it up. What was wrong with stating the obvious? It took real righteous courage. He even said mea culpa, not trying to put himself above anyone else. He made it clear that the top brass and White House were the ones to blame, not the soldiers. Free fire zones, Phoenix Program, Agent Orange, Napalm, My Lai Massacre. You don't call those atrocious?

If you watch Robert McNamara's film "The Fog Of War" he confesses exactly what Kerry was accusing him of. What's your beef? Are you for atrocious wars and 55,000 Americans being killed for a big mistake? What's your logic anyway? Are you trying to tell us Vietnam was a just, lawful war? Not even close. It was the biggest mistake the US made in the 20th century and we're still paying for it.

I know there were rightwingers who wanted to keep fighting that war until the bitter end but it would have been a fruitless continuation of an already awful situation. What was wrong with ending that war by finally taking the truth to the American people and making them force Nixon to end it at the voting booth?

Hi KLP,

Yes, Kerry did use the word "atrocities" during his testimony. I know you're right on that score.

In a recent tv interview (and I can't remember for the life of me where I saw it!), though, he said that if he had to say it over again, given the fact that he was in his twenties, etc., etc., he should have used another word.

And I think he should have too.
