If you have to borrow, say, $10,000 to cover a deficit, you are in debt to some lender to the tune of $10,000!

Seen in this light, deficit and debt are kinda synonymous,
and that government piece seems to be "sugar-coating" or rather downplaying things quite a bit.

The fact remains the US has incurred a humongous national debt accumulated over several presidential terms.

It is not entirely true that the government borrows all its money from the people. That is a gross misrepresentation of the fact. (Not too surprising these days.) All too often, the government has found it convenient to run the printing press for more and more paper cash. Did you know that, largely as a consequence of the easy "money-creation" by the Feds, the greenback has lost more than 90% of its purchasing power since Roosevelt's (FDR) time? And, as I write, the greenback is still heading lower as a consequence of Bush's foolish extravagance and irresponsibility. Bush deserves to be given the boot ASAP!
