I think your still not getting it. We both agree this massive debt is terrible. A deficit is the amount you have to borrow to cover the payments on the debt, which is even worse. If you personally had a deficit, you'd be screwed until you got rid of it. You're correct, the deficit does add to the debt and create more debt.
What happened when Clinton was in office was he eliminated the deficit (albeit temporarily) and froze the size of the debt payments. So, while not eliminating the debt, he had it headed in the right direction. He passed the surplus on to Bush, who returned it in tax cuts rather than paying down the debt, and then began ballooning the deficit, and the debt, again, like every other President since 1969. This is why I think Clinton was a great President, because this had a tremedous stimulating effect on the economy, without tax cuts or super low interest rates. Peace and prosperity, baby!
