THe word "liberal" is spoken by some conservatives as if it was a swear word!! Most Democrats I know are actually moderates........fiscally conservative and socially liberal. There are some left leaners that think the GOP wants to irradicate most of the social programs of the Roosevelt and Johnson eras...........medicare, social security are at the top of the list. It was the Democrats that passed all the basic bills that provide those benefits. I have heard it argued that the conservatives want to sell the public on something like security issues then tell them there is not enough money for everything............they would use the war on terror to run the deficit up too high and they will have to cut some essential programs as a result. Only for something like a terrorist attack will the public support the extinction of those programs.
