I knew of officers that traded recommendations...hardly the norm, but it was more than rare. That doesn't mean they embellished the reports, just gave a kickstart to the recognition.

What we all agree on about the Swift boats...

JFK got three P/H's with no lasting injuries
JFK didn't "miss a day at work" from wounds
JFK served in a combat area about 90 days
JFK initiated all of the medal petitions
JFK petitioned to cut his tour of duty short
JFK petitioned to cut his enlistment short

So far as I know, not even JFK disputes these facts.

JFK deserves credit and respect for requesting to serve in Vietnam.

Beyond that, I think he should he should drop the Vietnam "hero" bit.

We need to reserve "hero" for for the all-too-many examples of much greater sacrifice of life and limb, as well as much higher commitment to country and bands of brothers.
