<<< the act of driving drunk in and of itself kills no one>>>

Not true. It kills around 17,000 people a year in the US and accounts for 41% of all traffic fatalities.

1 - I didn't claim that driving drunk in and of itself kills no one. I was quoting LPS5 who made that claim, and then I responded to the claim.

2 - In a sense the claim is right, but in that same sense jumping off a building doesn't kill anyone, the sudden stop at the end does... I think you and I would both agree that drunk driving greatly increases the risks to people around the drunk driver. I guess that even LPS5 might agree.

3 - A more accurate statement would be that drunk driving is a factor in 41% of all traffic fatalities. How many of those fatalaties would have happened even if the driver was not drunk is impossible to determine. My guess would be that in most of those cases drunk driving was the decisive factor but it wasn't in all of them.

The absolutely ludicrous part is on any given day, you will never see a State Trooper handing out right of way violations in hot accident spots, they'll all be parked on deserted stretches of highway where there hasn't been an accident in the past decade.

They are often focused on things like speeding tickets rather then eliminating serious dangers from the road. Sure if they see a serious danger they are likely to deal with it but they spend a lot more time and effort on minor traffic offences, most of which did not put anyone in danger.

You coward, LOL. Why didn't you address my quote directly?

Not true. It kills around 17,000 people a year in the US and accounts for 41% of all traffic fatalities.

Try again; drunk driving doesn't kill anyone. Driving recklessly, on the other hand, can and does kill people.

Legalizing drunken driving on the argument drunks often don't kill anyone when they drive, would be about like saying drive by shootings should be legalized as often the shooter doesn't hit anyone.

You're right: it would be akin to saying that, and that isn't my argument.

On the flip side, the truly scary part is the number of people killed by drivers who are lethally dangerous even when sober.

True, and that is the point. Drinking and eating while driving, talking on cellphones, playing grab ass with passengers, futzing with the radio/CD player, or just spacing out are all contributors to reckless driving, accidents, and fatalities. (And, incidentally, I wouldn't criminalize any of those ill-advised activities either.

I don't see any justifiable basis for singling out people who have a substance of varying effect in their blood, while an untold number drive perfectly fine while legally drunk...in the same way that many individuals spill coffee on themselves, swerve, and avoid - however narrowly - accidents and subsequent legal entanglements.

NASTY BUSINESS -- Political Enemy Caught In A Web

I just received this via email....

<COPY>

A small group of us from www.911sharethetruth.com and www.911truth.org have been in touch over the last few hours with John Buchanan, who ran in the New Hampshire Republican primary as the "9/11 Truth Candidate" and was featured at the end of David Ray Griffin's book, "The New Pearl Harbor" and in the film, "9/11: The Greatest Lie Ever Sold."
On February 4, while on his way to speak at the National Press Club that evening, John was kidnapped by unidentified federal agents who claimed to be Secret Service officers but apparently were not. Four days later, upon his return hom to Miami, John was arrested on phony criminal charges in a 14-count felony complaint for aggravated stalking against a victim the state has failed to produce. On June 14, after the "victim" failed a second time to appear for a deposition, the judge informed the state attorney he would dismiss the charges today if the victim failed a third time to appear. The victim failed to appear last Thursday.
Today, however, the judge changed his mind -- and the state attorney refused even to let John plead guilty to a misdemaneor so that he could return to Maine and his 9/11 outreach actiivities prior to going to the Republican Convention in NY later this month.
The state of Florida now plans to put John on trial next week and he is facing five years in prison. His new public defender has also "lost" his evidence binder which he prepared to rebut the original allegations with more than a dozen witnesses and other evidence.
The fact is, John is being persecuted by the Bush regime for his courage in reportimg the "Bush-Nazi story" in the New Hampshire Gazette last fall and then taking Bush on earlier this year based on the ugly truth about 9/11. We the people of the 9/11 and anit-war/anti-corporatism movements can not sit by and watch this happen. We must all help John in any way we can -- NOW.
Given his dire situation, John needs a lot of help and moral support. Specifically, he needs some short-term financial support to surivive this, and legal assistance, as well as media attention to call attention to his persecution by the state.
Please call me immediately or (fill in Gabriel, David Kubiak or Richard Bosa, etc. as your personal alternatives). John has emerged as a courageous member of the 9/11 community and has made a firm commitment to continue on with the fight until the Bush administration has been held accountable. For that reason, he deserves your full and aggressive support.
Please also write a brief letter to the judge, Julio Jiminez, at Maimi-Dade Criminal Justice Building, 1351 NW 12th Street, Miami, FL 33125. Please be aware that just a few minutes of your time in expressing your support for John will make a big difference.
Should you wish to reach John, call (207) 332-3978 or e-mail him at jtwg50@yahoo.com.
Thank you.
