Ted, I think you need to realize that the polarization has been happening for much longer than just the past four years. Even back in 1988, I remember as a young kid watching the DNC, as they made fun of Bush Sr., saying, "He was born with a silver foot in his mouth!" That was the same campaign in which Bush Sr. ran a bunch of negative ads against Dukakis, especially the "Dukakis in a tank" image and the infamous Willie Horton ads.
