OBL was very popular throughout the Arab world right after 911. And that was before the decision to go into Iraq. Liberals always naively think fighting our enemies is bad cause it's really going to make them mad at us. Next point - we're not colonizing Iraq. But in re. to the Brit's colonizing in the ME, the biggest problem they ran into in the ME was Germany. After WWII, the Brits largely set their empire free as they no longer had the power to maintain it.
