"I am all for a national ID card."

How about we just tattoo everybody's wrist?

A national ID with a built-in full proof physical identification method, say a palmprint, can ID-check in seconds. It can be issued at the border to any visitors also in seconds (and only once). It comes very close to solving the illegal immigrant/terrorist problem, if coupled with a policy of using it for things such as renting a car, checking into a motel, renting/buying a house, etc. We can have a policy of allowing local cops to do spot checks at will. The information can be used for homeland security and for solving major crimes. It seems to me a no brainer, after 9/11.

Unfortunately, it won't pass until the next major terrorist catastrophe hits. Too many interests on both sides like the current situation of wide open borders and millions of illegals slipping in and out at will. It's a shame that the biggest terrorist threat by far is left untouched by both parties as well as the press.
