If everyone pitched in according to their income...

Spoken like a true Marxist.

BTW, isn't it a bit disingenuous of you to claim that the people without health insurance necessarily can't afford it and offer yourself up as proof? By your own admission, you made the conscious choice not to buy insurance because 1) at the market price, you felt the risk (of major health problems) did not justify the cost of the insurance and 2) you'd RATHER spend the money on something else.

Sorry wail-man, but that's classic free-market economic decision-making, not a choice that was imposed upon you by greedy capitalists, failed policy or even your own unfortunate circumstances. In fact, it seems more reasonable to conclude that your personal economic circumstances being relatively good is what has enabled you to take a risk that others may not be able to take.

Welcome to the rational world of economics.

We need a system where everyone participates. Who are the deadbeats? They're the ones that can't afford medical insurance, what is it now...40 million people without? If everyone pitched in according to their income, then there would be ample resources to cover medical needs.

So you are saying that if my income is twice yours, then I should be responsible to chip in and pay for a portion of your health care costs?

Last time I checked, there was a word for this. It's socialism.

Spreading the cost of medical care amongst people who pay is the idea behind insurance, but adding people who don't pay does NOT lower the average cost. Assuming that you had such a system, assuring that all the people who don't pay would practice a preventative lifestyle is an unrealistic pipe dream.
