I believe that even if Kerry had not drawn attention to his war record, pro-Bush forces would still have maligned him big-time about it.

Can't agree with you there.
The Democrats started with the Bush/AWOL business
long before Kerry emerged as the candidate.
Kerry, in turn, has stressed his military
background and, in fact, made it the
centerpiece of his campaign by virtue of
their approach at convention.

Had Kerry not done so, I can't see why
there'd be such focus on his military record.

Now maybe the swiftvets would still have come
forward; however, these are men who may very
well hold strong beliefs about Kerry as a
leader. Why is it that the left supports the
right of a Linda Ronstadt or Bruce Springsteen
to state their opinions of Bush, but have a fit
over these vets doing so?

How come they admire and cheer on Michael Moore?
Why has no one chastened Joe Wilson?

Yes, it's been a nasty political season, but the blame
is shared equally by the two parties, and much of the
dirty campaigning actually started with the Dems
during their long primary season and the initial
AWOL attacks.
