My point is that:

They have 35 years of anger built up. The key to their anger is on the "wall of Heroes" in the North Vietnamese war museum. Kerry's picture. They believe he helped them win. That alone is enough reason to deny him the Presidency.

O'Neil will do anything to defeat Kerry while lining his pockets in Viet Nam, which, according to the above quote, considers Kerry a hero. So he has reconciled with the Vietnamese, his former enemy, but not Kerry, his former, as he put it, crewmate? Odd duck, that O'Neil.
