There are 2 realms of "any real difference".
A different specific direction toward which shrub is taking the country is one.
The usual generalized stance that the two major parties have few practical differences is the other.
There are specific issues such as foreign policy, environment, fiscal responsibility and individual rights that shrub and his henchmen cannot be trusted with.
Four more years along shrub's direction is completely unacceptable.

1988-89
John Kerry, as a United States Senator, helps dismantle a crooked bank funding terrorists.
washingtonmonthly.com

George W. Bush, used money tied up with BCCI and terrorists to start up another business he wasn't qualified to run.
[By the spring of 1987, Harken was in need of cash. So Bush and his fellow Harken officials met with Jackson Stephens, head of Stephens, Inc., an investment bank in Little Rock, Arkansas (Stephens contributed $100,000 to the Reagan-Bush campaign in 1980 and gave another $100,000 to the Bush dinner committee in 1990.) Stephens arranged for Union Bank of Switzerland (UBS) to provide $25 million to Bush’s company in return for a stock interest in Harken. As part of the deal, Sheikh Abdullah Bakhsh, a Saudi real estate tycoon and financier, joined Harken's board as a major investor. Stephens, UBS, and Bakhsh each had ties to the infamous, scandal-ridden Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI)]

How John Kerry busted the terrorists' favorite bank

...in early 1988, when John Kerry, then a young senator from Massachusetts, decided to probe the finances of Latin American drug cartels. Over the next three years, Kerry fought against intense opposition from vested interests at home and abroad, from senior members of his own party; and from the Reagan and Bush administrations, none of whom were eager to see him succeed.
By the end, Kerry had helped dismantle a massive criminal enterprise and exposed the infrastructure of BCCI and its affiliated institutions, a web that law enforcement officials today acknowledge would become a model for international terrorist financing. As Kerry's investigation revealed in the late 1980s and early 1990s, BCCI was interested in more than just enriching its clients--it had a fundamentally anti-Western mission. Among the stated goals of its Pakistani founder were to "fight the evil influence of the West," and finance Muslim terrorist organizations. In retrospect, Kerry's investigation had uncovered an institution at the fulcrum of America's first great post-Cold War security challenge.

I'm not deluding myself. Kerry is very different from Bush. He's not the Second Coming, he's a career politician.

Bush is such a radical nut whose weakness of character allows him to be used by puppet masters like Cheney and Rove. They're very clear about who they owe their allegiance to and what their plans for the US are:

- Their Base: the top 1/10th of 1%, 'the haves and have mores, or, as I call you, my base'
- Transfer wealth from the majority of Americans to their base via:

1. War: noncompete, costplus contracts to HAL, Bechtel, et al. Oil profits to oil companies. Defense profits to defense companies. War is a huge profit maker for thir base.

2. Medicare bill: 30% increase in drug profits, no ability for government to negotiate prices. Guaranteed profit increases to BigPharma.

3. Tax Bill: transfer burden of taxes from the ultrawealthy to the middle class. Transfer burden of taxes from the coupon clipping, dividend receiving dilettantes to the working middle class families.

ETC.

These people make no bones about who they represent and what their goals are. They will stop at nothing to achieve those goals.

What I cannot understand is why anyone who is not part of the BASE, puts up with this behavior. I cannot understand why the middle class (and upper middle class) Republicans can't see through the 'gay marriage', 'cultural war', 'terrorist under your bed', 'Vietnam service' bs to see what the true goals are.

I'm very disappointed in the Republicans. They are giving their children's financial future to really rich people they don't even know. WHY?
