it leaks through the tiniest holes

I've worked with hydrogen quite a bit, and yes it is a pain. I would think though, there must be some molecule that has all the advantages of hydrogen, yet not such a pain, but can be manufactured from energy sources such as wind, nuclear power etc.

Gasoline is dangerous too. Half a cup of Gasoline vaporized in air is equal to several sticks of dynamite in explosive power. We use that all the time though.

I'm quite skeptical about using pure hydrogen as a fuel medium. Ethanol seems like a good candidate, provided that we can improve it's production and utilization efficiency. Here are some recent developments that I may have mentioned earlier here...

Welcome to Hindenberg High School !

There are better molecules - methane CH4 comes to mind, propane C3H8 both already in use. Butane C4H10 has it's own odor.
The alchols are liquid at room temperature, easy to transport.
Extensive liquid handling infrastruture already in place.

H2 is much more expensive to handle.
