So what is the standard for determining whether a soldier has earned a purple heart?

My Great Uncle received a purple heart. He was hit with a piece of shrpnel in the back from a German 88 on the anzio beachead. He told his AT Platoon to displace to the rear while he covered their retreat with a 37mm anti-tank gun. When the panzer grenadiers overran his position, they shot him in the back. He died to get his purple heart. He didn't even get a bronze star or silver star for this action.
