Mike, From the mid 70s to 81 I had to travel to NYC on business, and found almost all of the people to be bitter, obnoxious, and rude, to everyone around them. Not to mention the absence of the English language. The streets were filthy, the pan handlers were antagonistic, the cabbies didn't know where they were going, and people on the street would accost others for no reason at all. There was a gyp joint around every corner, and this was in Manhattan where people were supposed to have a little bit of sophistication. I wouldn't go back even if someone offered me a paid trip with all the trimmings. Just like LA, NYC ain't no place for a country boy.

You must know some socialists that are quite different from the ones I have known. They had their hand out, and wanted the federal government to pay for their lives from the cradle, to the grave. That's as bad as being a beggar.

Some of the people, in any group, will appreciate sports and the arts. That is a personal thing, and has nothing to do with political leanings.

BTW, who is UW?

NYC is a great place...
Socialists can be good people too...
I'd rather be here with these folks than with UW and his cronies any day.

Flippity Flop. Yesterday I was commie, or did you forget?

Believe me, we are all thrilled you are there. If you were not there I would volunteer to buy you a ticket to go there.
uw

Kholt, if you're reading, this is one of the reasons Michael gets shouted down a lot. Maybe it's normal for New Yorkers to act nasty, every one I've ever met has been like this. Narrow minded but convinced they are more broad minded than anybody else. New York is a big place, it's true, but compared to the rest of the world, it's quite small.

i lived, studied, and worked among socialists for three years when i studied and worked in germany. they generally are so serious that they don't have any fun until they drink. quasi-infinite discussions about the cruelty of the state and oppression of the people dominate time. competition was regarded as something foolish. i remember one fellow who thought american competition was extreme. his example was some pie or cake bakeoff that he had seen in a magazine, a kuchenwettbewerb. he thought that was just terrible. government being such a large part of the country gave people a good whipping boy for lots of problems they had. unfortunately germany's parliamentary system of government won't let them shake off their entitlement addiction, because they can't get a majority to run things for a while. they are sinking in tax burdens.
