To: jttmab who wrote (2517 ) 8/24/2004 1:27:24 PM From: mph Read Replies (1) | Respond to of 27181 You asked me : How do you explain your assertion that I thought that 527 ads are ok for Democrats but not for the GOP... what did I say that drew you to that conclusion. Well, you said this:And George Bush didn't muzzle the Swift Vets either. ... nor has he condemned the specific ad that he was questioned about. What he has done is ask the all 527 ads be stopped, which I find is an attempt at infringement of free speech. You also made much of Kerry condemning a particular ad. Your initial point was that he didn't wait to be asked by the press to do so. (that was the "loophole you were plugging.") My response to that was that he responded to McCain in so doing, which was set forth in both your link and mine. I also pointed out that Kerry's condemnation was disingenuous since his henchmen like Clark were essentially reiterating the contents of that ad on his behalf. So what did his purported condemnation actually achieve? As set forth above, you criticized Bush's approach ( which called on both sides to stop 527 activities) on the grounds that such would infringe on free speech. From this comment, I can only conclude that you do not believe Kerry should condemn other ads run on his behalf by moveon.org and the whole other slug of 527's who have been throwing money around like drunk sailors to defeat Bush for months on end. IOW, all this condemnation business really only became a hot button when a 527 group lit into Kerry. Or so it seems to me. So, if I incorrectly interpreted your position re: Kerry and the 527's, maybe you can just state it simply, including how your free speech infringement observation fits in. As for posing questions about comments of other posters, of course you can do it. Since I'm not sure of the posts to which you're referring and can't necessarily read the minds of GZ or Jagfan, I'll have to respectfully demur.
