After getting off a helicopter back at base - he noticed a grenade on the ground and picked it up. It went off in his hand. One of those weird military technicalities - he lost 3 limbs in service to his country, but it wasn't in combat. My Dad's career covers all of this same ground - 3 Purple Hearts from rather serious combat wounds, but his 2 worst injuries (including the one that eventually killed him) came outside of combat (but still in uniform) and generated no awards.
