There were free fire zones ordered by the US military. There were many of them. The VC Kerry shot had a loaded rocket launcher with him.

It is my understanding (if Unclewest is monitoring I'm sure he could give the definitive answer) that free fire zones merely refer to a type of battlefield management. It does not "FREE" soldiers to commit atrocities within the area.

Firing in a free zone, is against the normal rules of war,
